Alex has a thing for 80s movies. I mean, I do, too – some of my favourites are from the 80s – but she has a particular love for Top Gun. When its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick came out, we saw it in the theatre.
So when Heritage Park put out their summer drive-in movie schedule with both Top Gun movies on the bill in a double-feature, of course she wanted to go … on our anniversary.
Lest ye be wondering if this is something I’d agree to, first: they’re movies I like, so that’s automatically a win. Second, it makes Alex happy, which is also a win. There is no third.
Alex snagged tickets in the third row. This was important because while Heritage Park’s website was really clear that only small cars could park in the first few rows, they had no way to police it. So, naturally, assholes in large pickups went in the second row. (Thankfully, not in front of us, but there was some wrangling to get the larger trucks moved further back.)
We went in Alex’s e-Golf. Partly because it’s comfy, but mostly because it’s got the superior sound system. And yes, I did video record the opening with “Top Gun Anthem” playing. Still one of the greatest movie openers.
Being a double-feature, we were there for nearly five hours – 7pm until midnight. A few left after the first movie, some arrived for the second. We were there, as were most around us, from start to finish, before we all headed out into the night.
Easily our least traditional anniversary event, but I’ll argue one of my favourites over the last few years.
